Lees?

It was written on the wall, upstairs:

"I will drink life to the lees!"

And I didn't understand what "lees" mean.

To be honest, more than four years later I haven't looked in the dictionary the exact meaning of the word but I understand perfectly the philosophy behind the concept, that's for sure.

I've never heard of it before either, but apparently it means 'the sediment that forms on the bottom of a glass or bottle of wine.'

So to put it another way, it could mean 'I'll drink my wine all the way down to the sediment in the bottom'... or "live life to the full", as we say!

If I'm honest, no - not very often!!

We'd usually say "live life to the full"...
